As I was looking for a 4WD Expedition, I just happened to stumble upon the Massport online auction the day it started. Going back to when I was in school in 1999 when the Excursions first came out, I knew someday that I was going to own one. Over the years, I found some that I was interested in, but could not get to them fast enough. As prices for Excursions soared in recent years, I accepted that I was probably never going to find one or own one that was indeed a keeper for a reasonable price. One look at this 2005, and I knew I had to find a way. With a whopping one photo online to see of it, later it became four photos, all of which were poor quality, I still wanted to take the risk. With them not allowing public viewing, I was honestly scared to bid on it, as I know that these get even more crusty underneath than the Expeditions. With help from some contacts in the MSP, I gathered enough information to make an educated decision on what my max bid would be. After some praying, with three seconds to go, I closed my eyes and clicked my final bid. When I opened them, I found that I was the winner of the auction. I went down to lay eyes on it for the very first time ever and it was in a lot better shape than I anticipated. Needless to say, I was very happy with my purchase and looked forward to getting it home.
For those who do not know, the Mass State Police vehicles that are used by Troop F are not owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. They are owned by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), which is an independent public authority of the Commonwealth. Massport typically spares no expense on their vehicles, so the MSP Troop F vehicles are typically higher trim levels. This is why many of their police vehicles are high-packaged civilian models converted into police cars. This Excursion was not ordered specifically for them. It was purchased off the dealer lot as a near-fully optioned Ford Excursion Limited. I never thought I'd ever own a police car with heated leather seats and a DVD player in the back!
This unit was used as a Special Operations/VIP transport unit. Pretty much anyone high profile who did not bring their own vehicle was transported in this Excursion. More information and photos coming soon as I work on putting this unit back to in-service condition for use during the 2025 Police Week Vehicle Honor Guard.
